Statutory text

Bare law

(1) The Register of Firms shall be open to inspection by any person on payment of such fee as may be prescribed.

(2) All statements, notices and intimations filed under this Chapter shall be open to inspection, subject to such conditions and on payment of such fee as may be prescribed.

Central rule and applicability

Any person may inspect the Register on payment of the prescribed fee. Statements, notices and intimations filed under Chapter VII are also open to inspection, subject to prescribed conditions and fee. The applicable State procedure determines how inspection is requested and carried out.

Limits and related provisions

The right is not a promise of free unrestricted online access to every business document. The subsection (2) document categories and prescribed conditions matter. Inspection is also distinct from obtaining a certified register copy under Section 67, and registered particulars do not establish every commercial claim about the firm.

Hypothetical business example

Hypothetical: a supplier checks a prospective customer's Register of Firms entry and relevant recorded change notices. It follows the prescribed inspection procedure and then requests a certified register copy where evidential use is needed, while conducting separate credit checks.

Practical decision flow

Identify the firm, Registrar and precise register entry or filed document needed.

Follow the applicable inspection request, identification conditions and fee procedure.

Record what was inspected and obtain an appropriate certified copy when formal proof is required.

Check the applicable state law

This guide explains the central Section 66 baseline. State amendments, notifications and rules can affect its application. Confirm the law applicable to the firm's location and the relevant partnership agreement before acting.
