Statutory text
Bare law
It is the duty of the bailee to return, or deliver according to the bailor’s directions, the goods bailed, without demand, as soon as the time for which they were bailed has expired, or the purpose for which they were bailed has been accomplished.
Rule and business relevance
The return duty follows either expiry of the bailment time or accomplishment of its purpose. Delivery must follow the bailor’s directions as applicable.
Limits and related provisions
Check any lawful lien or other applicable right rather than treating the return rule in isolation. Record when the purpose actually finished.
