About DIN (Director Identification Number)
What is DIN?
Director Identification Number (DIN) is a unique identification number issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to individuals who are directors or intend to become directors of a company. DIN is mandatory for all directors of companies incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013. Once allotted, DIN is valid for a lifetime unless surrendered or deactivated.
How to Apply for DIN?
- 1.Obtain Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) - mandatory for DIR-3 form
- 2.Fill Form DIR-3 with personal details and photograph
- 3.Attach identity proof (PAN, Aadhaar), address proof, and photograph
- 4.Pay the prescribed fee (currently INR 500) on MCA portal
- 5.Submit form digitally and track status using acknowledgment number
- 6.DIN is usually allotted within 3-5 working days if all details are correct
KYC Requirements for Directors
Every DIN holder must complete annual KYC filing via Form DIR-3 KYC. This is mandatory to keep the DIN active. The following are required:
- +Valid PAN card
- +Aadhaar card for e-KYC
- +Current residential address with proof
- +Active email ID and mobile number
- +Passport-size photograph (for paper filing)
DIN Status Explained
Active
DIN is valid and KYC is up-to-date. Can act as director.
Deactivated
DIN was active but deactivated, usually due to non-filing of KYC.
Lapsed
DIN has lapsed after expiry date without renewal/reactivation.
