What is Salary & HRA Calculator?
The Salary & HRA Calculator is a free online tool that helps salaried individuals in India compute their gross salary, House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption, total deductions, taxable income, tax liability, and take-home salary as per the Income Tax Act, 1961.
HRA (House Rent Allowance) is a common component of salary paid by employers to employees for rent expenses. Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, employees can claim HRA exemption on the lowest of three amounts: (a) actual HRA received, (b) 50% of basic salary for metro cities (40% for non-metro), or (c) excess of rent paid over 10% of basic salary.
This calculator uses the Old Tax Regime for computation, which allows various deductions and exemptions including HRA. It applies the applicable tax slabs and adds Health & Education Cess at 4%.

Common Salary & HRA Tax Mistakes
Not claiming HRA exemption
Always claim HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) if you receive HRA and pay rent. Submit rent receipts and landlord PAN if applicable.
Wrong city classification
Only Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai are metro cities. 50% HRA exemption applies only in these four cities.
Ignoring 80C limit
80C deductions are capped at ₹1,50,000/year. EPF contributions by your employer already count towards this limit.
Missing rent receipts
Maintain monthly rent receipts and, for annual rent exceeding ₹1,00,000, collect landlord PAN details.
Not filing returns on time
File ITR by 31st July to avoid late fees. Belated returns can be filed until 31st December with a fee.
Confusing Old vs New Regime
Compare both regimes. New regime has lower slabs but removes exemptions like HRA. Choose based on your salary and deductions.
Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.

Frequently asked questions
HRA exemption is the lowest of three amounts: (1) actual HRA received, (2) 50% of basic salary for metro cities (40% for non-metro), or (3) excess of rent paid over 10% of basic salary. The lowest of these three is exempt from tax.
As per the Income Tax Act, only four cities are classified as metro for HRA purposes: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. In these cities, 50% of basic salary is considered for exemption. All other cities are non-metro with 40% of basic.
Under the Old Tax Regime, salaried individuals get a standard deduction of ₹50,000. This was reinstated in Budget 2023, replacing the erstwhile transport and medical allowances.
If your total annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must provide your landlord's PAN card to your employer. If the landlord does not have a PAN, you need a declaration from them along with their name and address.
The New Tax Regime offers lower tax rates but removes most exemptions and deductions. The Old Regime allows HRA exemption, 80C/80D deductions, and standard deduction. For salaried individuals with significant deductions, the Old Regime is often better. Use our calculator to compare.
The overall limit for Section 80C deductions is ₹1,50,000 per financial year. This includes investments in PPF, ELSS, NSC, EPF, life insurance premiums, principal repayment on home loans, children's tuition fees, and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana.
