GSTN-integrated · Part-B update · Real-time changes

Update vehicle or transporter on your e-way bill in minutes

When a vehicle breaks down, a new truck is assigned, or the transporter changes during transit, you must update Part-B of the e-way bill on the GSTN portal. Part-B contains the vehicle number (or GRRR number for railways) and the transporter's GSTIN. The update must be made before the e-way bill validity expires, or anytime after expiry for vehicle/transporter changes. We handle Part-B updates from ₹29 per update.

What is Part-B of an e-way bill?

An e-way bill has two main parts: Part-A and Part-B. Part-A contains details of the goods (HSN code, value, quantity), the consignor, the consignee, and the transport details. Part-B contains the transporter details - specifically the transporter's GSTIN and the vehicle number (for road transport) or the GRRR number (for rail transport).

Part-B must be furnished before the e-way bill is used for transport. If the transporter or vehicle changes during transit, Part-B must be updated on the GSTN portal with the new details. The update must be done before the e-way bill validity expires. However, if the goods are still in transit and the vehicle or transporter changes after expiry, Part-B can still be updated - the Rule 138 restriction on cancellation after expiry does not apply to Part-B updates.

In practice, Part-B updates are common in logistics operations where goods change hands or vehicles during long-distance transport. Our service ensures that Part-B is always updated before the validity window closes, avoiding compliance issues during transport checks.

Update Part-B yourself vs through us

Part-B updates seem simple, but a missed 15-minute window before expiry, an incorrect GSTIN format, or portal downtime can leave you non-compliant.

When do you need a Part-B update?

Part-B updates are required whenever the transporter or vehicle assigned to an e-way bill changes during transit.

  • Vehicle breaks down and a replacement vehicle is assigned during transit
  • Transporter subcontracts the delivery to another transporter mid-route
  • Consignment is transferred from one vehicle to another at a transshipment point
  • Rail transport uses a GRRR number that needs to be updated from road to rail or vice versa
  • Goods are moved by a different vehicle than the one initially assigned
  • E-way bill was generated without Part-B (vehicle unknown at dispatch) - Part-B must be added before movement continues

You or your logistics team

Our team

3

Update Part-B on GSTN portal

We log into the GSTN portal, enter the EWB number, update Part-B with the new vehicle/transporter details, and submit.

Our team

4

Confirmation shared

You receive the updated e-way bill with the new Part-B details and a confirmation timestamp.

Our team

If the e-way bill is within 15 minutes of expiry, the GSTN portal may reject the Part-B update. In this case, we recommend cancelling the e-way bill and generating a fresh one. We will guide you on the best action.

Timeline

Part-B update timeline

Part-B updates are processed instantly on the GSTN portal. The critical factor is timing relative to the e-way bill validity.

Part-B can be updated before expiry (15-min buffer) or after expiry (for vehicle/transporter changes only). The e-way bill must not be marked 'cancelled' or 'generated' in error - in those cases, a new e-way bill is needed instead.

Part-B update vs cancellation: when to use which?

  • Part-B update when only the vehicle or transporter changes. If the same goods are being moved to the same destination but the vehicle or transporter has changed, update Part-B. You do not need to cancel and re-generate. Part-B update is cheaper (₹29 vs ₹49 for cancellation) and faster.
  • Cancellation when consignment details change. If the goods, consignee, value, or HSN code changes, you cannot fix this with a Part-B update. Cancel the e-way bill and generate a new one with the correct details. Our cancel + regenerate plan is ₹149.
  • Multiple Part-B updates are allowed. Part-B can be updated multiple times for the same e-way bill. This is useful for long hauls where the goods change transporters multiple times. Each update is recorded on the GSTN portal.
Common failure points

Common Part-B update mistakes

Updating Part-B after the e-way bill has expired (for reasons other than vehicle/transporter change)

Part-B updates after expiry are only permitted for vehicle or transporter changes. For other changes, cancel and re-generate.

Entering an incorrect vehicle number format

We validate vehicle number formats (state code + RTO code + number) before submission to avoid GSTN rejection.

Using an incorrect transporter GSTIN

We verify the transporter GSTIN on the GSTN portal before updating Part-B, ensuring the transporter is active and valid.

Waiting until the last minute to update Part-B

We send expiry reminders 30 minutes before the e-way bill validity ends, giving you ample time to provide updated details.

Not updating Part-B when the vehicle changes

Even if the same transporter uses a different vehicle, Part-B must be updated with the new vehicle number. We remind logistics teams of this requirement.

Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.

If you have already been rejected, or want to make sure it does not happen, the 15-minute call below is the fastest path.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Part-B of an e-way bill contains the transporter details - specifically the transporter's GSTIN and the vehicle number (for road transport) or the GRRR number (for rail transport). Part-B must be furnished before the e-way bill is used for transport. It is updated whenever the transporter or vehicle changes during transit.

Part-B must be updated when: (1) the vehicle changes mid-transit (breakdown, reassignment), (2) the transporter changes mid-transit (subcontracting), (3) the consignment transfers from road to rail or vice versa, (4) the e-way bill was generated without Part-B and the vehicle/transporter is now known.

The GSTN portal charges no fee for Part-B updates. Our professional fee starts at ₹29 per Part-B update. Bulk update packs (20 updates for ₹499) and a monthly unlimited compliance plan (₹2,499/month) are available.

Yes. Part-B updates are permitted even after the e-way bill expires, provided the goods are still in transit and the update is for a vehicle or transporter change. This is different from cancellation, which is not permitted after the 24-hour post-expiry window.

The GSTN portal allows Part-B updates up to 15 minutes before the e-way bill validity expires. After that, the portal will reject the update. We send reminders 30 minutes before expiry to ensure updates are completed with time to spare.

GRRR (Goods Receipt-cum-Reservation Receipt) is a number issued by Indian Railways for goods transported by rail. When goods are moved by rail instead of road, the GRRR number replaces the vehicle number in Part-B of the e-way bill.

Yes. Part-B can be updated multiple times during the transit of the same e-way bill. Each update is recorded on the GSTN portal with a timestamp. This is common for long-distance consignments where the goods change transporters at multiple transshipment points.

If you miss the Part-B update window before expiry and the goods are still in transit, you can still update Part-B after expiry (for vehicle/transporter changes only). However, if the update is needed for other reasons, you may need to cancel and re-generate the e-way bill.

While not legally required, it is good practice to inform the consignee of Part-B updates so they are aware of any vehicle or transporter changes. This helps avoid confusion at the delivery point.

Update Part-B with the correct transporter GSTIN immediately. We verify the GSTIN on the portal before submission. An incorrect transporter GSTIN can lead to disputes during transit checks.

Yes. For a consolidated e-way bill, Part-B contains the main vehicle transporting all the consignments. If that vehicle changes, Part-B of the consolidated e-way bill must be updated. Additionally, if an individual e-way bill under a consolidated EWB has a vehicle change, Part-B of that individual e-way bill must be updated.

Part-B should ideally be furnished at the time of e-way bill generation. If the vehicle or transporter is not known at the time of generation (e.g., goods are being handed over to a transporter at a later point), Part-B can be updated later before the goods are moved.

To update Part-B, you need: (1) the e-way bill number, (2) the new vehicle number or GRRR number, (3) the new transporter GSTIN (if changed), and (4) access to the GSTN portal with the generator's credentials.

The GSTN portal shows the validity period and expiry time on the e-way bill. We send WhatsApp and email reminders 30 minutes before expiry for every e-way bill we manage, giving you time to update Part-B or take other necessary action.

Yes, the GSTN e-way bill portal is mobile-responsive and Part-B updates can be done from a smartphone. However, for bulk updates or when managing 100+ e-way bills, using our service is more efficient - we handle all updates in one batch.
