What is a business loan and who is it for?

A business loan is a sum of money borrowed from a bank, NBFC, or government scheme to fund business operations, expansion, equipment purchase, or working capital needs. Business loans in India come in many forms: term loans for capital expenditure, working capital loans for day-to-day operations, machinery loans for equipment, and government-backed loans like Mudra and CGTMSE.

MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) form the backbone of the Indian economy, contributing over 30% to GDP. Recognizing this, the Government of India and RBI have created multiple schemes specifically designed to make credit accessible to small businesses - Mudra loans (up to ₹10 lakh), CGTMSE-guaranteed loans (up to ₹5 crore), and Startup India seed funding (up to ₹20 lakh for DPIIT-recognized startups).

At Bizeneed, we prepare your loan application, match you with the right lender or government scheme, and increase your approval chances. Our finance advisors understand the nuances of each scheme - from eligibility criteria to documentation requirements - so you get the best fit for your business.

प्रक्रिया

How to apply for a business loan

The loan application process varies by lender and scheme, but the core steps remain the same.

  1. Assess your requirements

Determine the loan amount, tenure, and type (term loan, working capital, machinery) needed. Prepare a business plan or project report showing how the funds will be used.

  2. Check eligibility

We run a free eligibility check based on your business vintage, turnover, credit score, and scheme-specific criteria. This saves time by targeting only the lenders most likely to approve.

  3. Prepare documents

Gather KYC documents, financial statements, bank statements, GST returns, and business plan. We review and prepare the complete application package.

  4. Submit application

Submit to the chosen bank/NBFC or government scheme portal. For Mudra and CGTMSE, we coordinate with our partner banks for faster processing.

  5. Bank appraisal

The lender appraises your application - credit score check, financial analysis, business plan review, and sometimes a physical visit to your business premises.

  6. Disbursement

Once approved, the loan agreement is signed and funds are disbursed to your account. For working capital loans, this may be as a cash credit limit or overdraft facility.

Government-backed schemes (Mudra, CGTMSE) often have lower interest rates but longer processing times due to government workflows. Private banks and NBFCs are faster but charge higher rates. We recommend starting with government schemes for the best rates, and falling back to private lenders if time is critical.

Mudra, CGTMSE, Startup India: which government scheme fits you?

  • Mudra (Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency) - for micro and small enterprises. Mudra offers three products: Shishu (up to ₹50,000 for starters), Kishore (₹50,000-₹5 lakh for growing businesses), and Tarun (₹5 lakh-₹10 lakh for established MSMEs). No collateral is required. The scheme is implemented through banks, NBFCs, and MFIs. Apply through your bank with a business plan and KYC documents.
  • CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises) - for collateral-free loans up to ₹5 crore. CGTMSE provides a credit guarantee of up to 85% (for micro enterprises) and 75% (for small enterprises) to lending institutions, enabling collateral-free loans. The scheme covers term loans and working capital. It is managed by SIDBI and is available through all major banks. Your business must be MSME-registered (Udyam) to apply.
  • Startup India Seed Fund - for DPIIT-recognized startups. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) provides up to ₹20 lakh to DPIIT-recognized startups for proof of concept, prototype development, or product trials. It is not a loan - it is a grant, so there is no repayment. Eligibility: DPIIT recognition, less than 2 years old, and not received more than ₹10 lakh in government funding previously.
  • Stand-Up India - for SC/ST/women entrepreneurs. The Stand-Up India scheme facilitates bank loans between ₹10 lakh and ₹1 crore to SC/ST and women entrepreneurs for setting up greenfield enterprises. At least 51% of the enterprise must be owned and controlled by an SC/ST/woman entrepreneur. Collateral is required unless covered by CGTMSE.
  • PMEGP (Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme) - for manufacturing and service enterprises. PMEGP provides margin money assistance (subsidy) of up to 35% for urban and 40% for rural areas, reducing your own contribution. Maximum project cost: ₹25 lakh (manufacturing) and ₹10 lakh (service). Administered by KVIC and KVIB through banks.

अक्सर होने वाली गलतियाँ

Common mistakes when applying for a business loan

Applying to only one bank without comparing schemes

Government schemes (Mudra, CGTMSE) often have better rates than bank products. We compare across all channels before recommending.

Submitting incomplete or inaccurate financials

Banks cross-check financials with IT returns and GST filings. Mismatches are a top reason for rejection. Ensure your financials, IT returns, and GST returns are consistent.

Having a low CIBIL score without addressing it

Check your CIBIL score before applying. If below 650, consider secured loans (against property, FD) or government schemes which are more flexible. We also advise on score improvement.

Not preparing a business plan

Lenders need to understand how you will use and repay the loan. A well-structured business plan or project report significantly improves approval chances, especially for Mudra and Startup India schemes.

Borrowing more than needed

Over-borrowing increases EMI burden. We help you calculate the right amount based on cash flow projections. A realistic loan size is easier to get approved and easier to service.
