Rule 299: Tax treatment of PF balances when recognition is withdrawn

Rule 299 protects balances built up while a provident fund was recognised. If recognition is withdrawn, the balance to each employee's credit at the end of the financial year before withdrawal is paid to him free of tax when he receives the accumulated balance, subject to paragraph 9 of Part A of Schedule XI. The remaining balance is taxed as if the fund had never been recognised. Rules 292 to 300 deal with recognised provident funds under Part A of Schedule XI to the Act.
