ICEGATE · Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs

ICEGATE Registration - Indian Customs EDI Gateway

ICEGATE (Indian Customs EDI Gateway) is the portal through which importers, exporters, and customs brokers electronically file shipping bills, bills of entry, and other customs documents with Indian Customs. Registration requires three things to already be in place - a valid Import Export Code (IEC), a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), and AD Code registration with your bank, linked to the ports you ship through. We check your prerequisites, complete the ICEGATE registration on your behalf, and get your account ready so your shipments aren't stuck waiting on customs paperwork.

What is ICEGATE registration?

ICEGATE - the Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway - is the official portal operated under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) that lets importers, exporters, and customs brokers file customs documents electronically instead of manually at a customs house. This includes shipping bills for exports, bills of entry for imports, and various other declarations that customs requires for clearance.

Registering on ICEGATE gives you a login to file these documents yourself, track their status, receive electronic communication from customs, and access services like duty payment and document tracking online. Without ICEGATE registration, your customs filings typically have to route through a customs broker for every transaction, which adds cost and time.

ICEGATE registration is not a standalone application - it depends on three things already being in place: your Import Export Code (IEC) issued by DGFT, a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) in the name of your authorised signatory, and your bank's AD (Authorised Dealer) Code registered with customs at each port you intend to ship through. Getting these three lined up correctly is what actually determines how smoothly your ICEGATE registration goes.

Eligibility

Who needs ICEGATE registration?

Anyone who wants to file customs documents directly, rather than solely through a customs broker for every shipment, needs to register on ICEGATE.

  • Importers who want to file bills of entry themselves and track customs clearance status online
  • Exporters who want to file shipping bills directly and avoid depending entirely on a customs broker
  • Customs House Agents (CHAs) / customs brokers who file on behalf of multiple importer-exporter clients
  • Businesses that ship regularly and want visibility into duty payments, document status, and customs communication
  • Anyone applying for or renewing an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) status, where ICEGATE access is typically expected
  • Freight forwarders and shipping lines that need to exchange manifest and cargo data electronically with customs

Process

How ICEGATE registration works

ICEGATE registration itself is a short online step - almost all the time goes into getting the three prerequisites right.

1

Confirm or obtain your IEC

You need a valid Import Export Code from DGFT before anything else. If you don't have one, we file it first - this typically takes a few working days.

2

Get a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate

ICEGATE requires a Class 3 DSC issued in the name of your authorised signatory. We arrange this if you don't already have one valid for customs use.

3

Register your AD Code with customs at each port

Your bank issues an AD (Authorised Dealer) Code letter, which then needs to be registered separately at every customs port you plan to ship through - this is a common step people miss and it blocks filing at that specific port until done.

4

Complete the ICEGATE online registration

With IEC, DSC, and AD Code in place, we submit your ICEGATE registration application with entity and signatory details, and link your DSC to the account.

5

Activate and verify your ICEGATE login

Once approved, your ICEGATE user ID is activated - we verify that document filing, duty payment, and tracking access are all working before considering the job done.

ICEGATE registration has no government fee and can technically be self-filed once your prerequisites are ready. Where consultants add real value is in the prerequisite chain - a Class 3 DSC that isn't customs-compatible, or an AD Code registered at the wrong port, are the two most common reasons ICEGATE filings get stuck, and both are avoidable with the right checks upfront.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

ICEGATE registration is enrolling on the Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway, the official portal for filing shipping bills, bills of entry, and other customs documents electronically with Indian Customs (CBIC).

Importers, exporters, and customs brokers who want to file customs documents directly - rather than solely through a broker for every transaction - need to register. It's also commonly expected for Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) applications.

Three things: a valid Import Export Code (IEC) from DGFT, a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) in the name of your authorised signatory, and AD Code registration with customs at each port you ship through, based on a letter from your bank.

Yes, the government charges no fee for ICEGATE registration itself. Costs are involved in the prerequisites - the DSC and, indirectly, the IEC application if you don't already have one.

An AD (Authorised Dealer) Code is issued by your bank and identifies the account through which your export proceeds are routed. Customs requires this code to be separately registered at each port you ship through - registering it at one port does not automatically activate it at another.

No. ICEGATE registration for filing documents requires a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate issued to your authorised signatory - this is used to digitally sign your customs filings.

Typically 2-5 working days once your IEC, DSC, and AD Code are already in place. If any of these prerequisites still need to be arranged, the overall timeline extends accordingly.

ICEGATE registration lets you electronically file customs documents like shipping bills and bills of entry with Indian Customs. APEDA registration (RCMC) is a separate, product-specific certification required for exporters of scheduled agricultural and processed food products. Exporters of those products typically need both.

Yes. Customs House Agents (CHAs) and customs brokers register on ICEGATE to file on behalf of multiple importer-exporter clients, using their CHA licence along with the standard IEC, DSC, and AD Code requirements.

You can file shipping bills and bills of entry electronically, track the status of your filings, receive customs communications online, pay duties, and access various trade facilitation services offered through the portal.

The ICEGATE user registration itself is a single account, but your AD Code needs to be separately registered at each customs port you ship through before you can file documents for shipments at that port.

You will need to renew your Digital Signature Certificate and re-link the new certificate to your ICEGATE profile to continue filing documents - an expired DSC will block electronic filing until it's renewed.

A valid GST registration certificate is typically required as part of the standard documentation for ICEGATE registration, alongside your IEC and PAN.

Yes, if your IEC, DSC, and AD Code are already correctly in place, ICEGATE registration can be self-filed on the portal at no government cost. Most delays happen at the prerequisite stage rather than the ICEGATE filing itself.

ICEGATE access is commonly expected as part of the documentation and process for businesses applying for or maintaining AEO status, since AEO benefits are tied closely to electronic customs interactions.
