What is an IFSC Code?

IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character alphanumeric code used to identify bank branches participating in NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS electronic funds transfer systems in India. It is assigned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to each bank branch.

The IFSC code format is: First 4 characters represent the bank name, the 5th character is '0' (zero) reserved for future use, and the last 6 characters represent the specific branch. For example, 'SBIN0001234' represents State Bank of India, branch code 001234.

IFSC codes are required for: NEFT transfers, RTGS transfers, IMPS transfers, UPI registrations, and various online payment systems. You can find the IFSC code on your cheque book, passbook, or bank's website.
