What is the GST Rate Finder?

The GST Rate Finder is a free online tool that helps businesses, accountants, and individuals quickly look up the correct Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate applicable to any product or service in India.

GST is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax levied on every value addition. It subsumed various indirect taxes including VAT, service tax, excise duty, and others. Under GST, all goods and services are classified into five tax slabs: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

Our GST Rate Finder uses the Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes for goods and Services Accounting Codes (SAC) for services to help you identify the precise GST rate. Simply search by product name, HSN/SAC code, or browse by category to find the applicable rate instantly.

The tool also features a reverse GST calculator that helps you compute the base price and GST amount from a total price - supporting both intra-state transactions (CGST + SGST) and inter-state transactions (IGST).

Common failure points

Common GST Mistakes to Avoid

Applying wrong GST rate

Always verify the HSN/SAC code and check the official CBIC tariff before charging GST.

Missing HSN/SAC code on invoice

For B2B invoices above ₹5 lakh, HSN code is mandatory. For B2C, it's required above ₹2.5 crore turnover.

Not distinguishing intra-state vs inter-state

Intra-state requires CGST + SGST split; inter-state requires IGST. Use the same rate but split the amount correctly.

Forgetting GST on free supplies

GST applies to free supplies deemed as supply under GST law. Always account for GST even on free goods.

Wrong SAC code for services

Each service has a unique SAC code. Using the wrong code can lead to classification disputes and penalties.

Ignoring composition scheme rules

If registered under composition scheme, different GST rates and filing rules apply. Stay updated.

Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.

If you have already been rejected, or want to make sure it does not happen, the 15-minute call below is the fastest path.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

India has five GST slabs: 0% (nil/exempt), 5% (low rate for essentials), 12% (standard rate), 18% (high rate), and 28% (highest rate for luxury/sin goods). Some items also attract a cess on top of GST, like 22% cess on small cars (making effective rate 43%) or 1% cess on petrol cars.

HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature. It is an internationally accepted 6-8 digit code system for classifying goods. Under GST, HSN codes help identify products and their applicable tax rates. For exports, an 8-digit HSN code is mandatory. For domestic trade, a 2-digit (business turnover below ₹1.5 crore) or 4-digit code is required.

SAC stands for Services Accounting Code. It is a unique 6-digit code used to classify services under GST. Each type of service has a specific SAC code. For example, legal services have SAC 998211, restaurant services have SAC 996332, and consulting services have SAC 998314. SAC codes help determine the correct GST rate for services.

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are both applied at equal rates for intra-state transactions - where the supplier and recipient are in the same state. IGST (Integrated GST) is applied for inter-state transactions and imports. For example, on a product with 18% GST sold within the same state: 9% CGST + 9% SGST = 18% total. Sold between states: 18% IGST.

GST is calculated on the base price (excluding GST). The formula is: GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100. Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount. For example, if a product costs ₹1,000 and GST is 18%, the GST amount is ₹180 and the total price is ₹1,180.

Mobile phones attract 12% GST under HSN code 8517. This rate has been consistent since 2020. If a mobile phone costs ₹10,000, the GST amount would be ₹1,200, making the total price ₹11,200.

Electric vehicles (EVs) attract a reduced GST rate of 5% (down from 12%) to promote EV adoption in India. This applies to electric cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and buses. Additionally, there is no GST on charging stations and certain EV-related services.

Most educational services are exempt from GST (0% rate) under the GST law. This includes pre-school education, school education up to higher secondary, higher education (degree courses), and vocational training. However, coaching classes for competitive exams and online courses may attract 5% to 18% GST depending on the nature of service.

GST on real estate varies by property type and price. Affordable housing (carpet area up to 60 sq.m in metro, up to 90 sq.m in non-metro, and priced below ₹45 lakh) attracts 1% GST. Other residential properties attract 5% GST. Commercial real estate attracts 5% GST with full input tax credit. Residential rent below ₹20 lakh per month is exempt; above that, 18% GST applies.

Yes. Our reverse GST calculator supports both transaction types. For intra-state transactions, it splits the GST equally into CGST and SGST. For inter-state transactions, it calculates the full amount as IGST. Simply select the transaction type before calculating.

GST rates are updated by the GST Council through notifications. Changes can happen during GST Council meetings (typically quarterly). The council may add items to lower slabs, rationalize rates, or make other changes. We update our database regularly but recommend cross-checking with the latest CBIC notification for critical business decisions.

The composition scheme is a simplified GST compliance option for small taxpayers with turnover up to ₹3 crore (₹1.5 crore for service providers). Under this scheme, businesses pay a fixed GST rate (1-5% depending on business type) instead of regular GST. They cannot claim input tax credit (ITC) and cannot make inter-state supplies.

Most healthcare services are exempt from GST (0%). This includes hospital services, diagnostic services, and treatment by recognized medical practitioners. However, some specific health services like cosmetic surgery (unless for reconstruction), health check-up packages in certain cases, and certain medical devices may attract 5% to 18% GST.

GST registration is mandatory if your aggregate turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for northeastern states) or ₹20 lakh for services (₹10 lakh for northeastern states). However, you can voluntarily register even below these thresholds to claim input tax credit. Registration is also mandatory for e-commerce sellers, casual taxable persons, and those making inter-state supplies.
