What is GST Number Validation?
GST Number Validation (GSTIN verification) is the process of checking the authenticity and current status of a GST Identification Number (GSTIN). Every GST-registered taxpayer is assigned a unique GSTIN, and verifying it helps ensure that you're dealing with a legitimate registered business.
GSTIN validation is important for businesses making B2B transactions, as it confirms that the supplier is registered under GST and that you can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on purchases. The GST portal provides a free tool to check GSTIN status, taxpayer details, and registration validity.
Under GST law, a GSTIN is a 15-character alphanumeric number. The first 2 digits represent the state code, the next 10 characters are the PAN of the taxpayer, the 13th character represents the entity number, the 14th character is 'Z' by default, and the 15th character is a check digit.

Verify on GST Portal
The GST portal shows: taxpayer name, registration date, status (active/inactive), jurisdiction, constitution of business, and type of registration.

Common GSTIN Mistakes
Not verifying GSTIN of suppliers before claiming ITC
Always verify GSTIN before claiming ITC. ITC claims based on fake GSTINs can result in denial and penalties.
Using GSTIN from a different state
GSTIN's first 2 digits indicate the state. Verify the supplier's state matches your records.
Ignoring GSTIN status
Even if the number is valid, check if it's 'Active'. Inactive GSTINs cannot be used for ITC.
Every rejection above has a fix - most come down to how the innovation note is written, not the business itself. Most applicants don't know that until after the rejection.
If you have already been rejected, or want to make sure it does not happen, the 15-minute call below is the fastest path.

Frequently asked questions
You can verify a GSTIN on the GST portal (gst.gov.in) using the 'Search Taxpayer' feature. Enter the 15-digit GSTIN and the portal will show the taxpayer's details and current status.
GSTIN validation shows: Legal name of the taxpayer, trade name, registration date, status (active/inactive/cancelled/suspended), jurisdiction, constitution of business, type of registration (regular/composition), and last updated date.
GSTIN is a 15-character alphanumeric number. Format: [State Code (2 digits)][PAN (10 characters)][Entity Number (1 character)][Z (1 character)][Check Digit (1 character)]. Example: 27AAAAA0000A1Z5.
If a GSTIN is inactive, suspended, or cancelled, you cannot claim Input Tax Credit on supplies from that taxpayer. In such cases, you should request the supplier to either reactivate their GST registration or issue a new invoice from their active GSTIN.
