Frequently asked questions
Design registration protects the visual appearance of a product - its shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation. It is registered under the Designs Act, 2000 and prevents others from copying your unique product design.
Any new or original design that is not previously published and is significantly distinguishable from known designs can be registered. This includes shape, configuration, pattern, or ornamentation applied to any article in any class.
Design registration is valid for 10 years from the date of registration. It can be renewed for an additional 5 years (total maximum of 15 years).
Design registration protects the visual appearance/physical shape of a product, while trademark protects brand identifiers like names and logos. A product can have both design and trademark protection simultaneously.
