Frequently asked questions
Copyright registration is the process of legally registering your original creative work with the Copyright Office under the Copyright Act, 1957. It provides legal protection against unauthorised reproduction, distribution, or modification of your work.
Copyright protects original works of authorship including literary works (books, articles, software code), artistic works (paintings, photographs, sculptures), musical works (songs, compositions), dramatic works (plays, choreography), cinematograph films, and sound recordings.
Copyright protection lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years after their death. For anonymous or pseudonymous works, the duration is 60 years from publication.
While copyright protection exists automatically upon creation of an original work, registration with the Copyright Office provides additional legal benefits including prima facie evidence of ownership in court proceedings.
